My Inspirations

My Biggest Inspirations...My Children Stephen & Jessica

It’s always easy to point out the things that make your blood boil.  Bad drivers, long lines, social injustice – sometimes just reading the news headlines every day can bring you down.  But I’m interested in what lifts us up!  So here’s the start of a list of the things that inspire me.  I’m looking around on purpose now, making a CHOICE to find the things on this journey that inspire….

Stephen and Jessica Ratkovich - my children and the two people who keep me centered and real

Katharine Hepburn – a woman ahead of her time

Mildred Farnsworth – one of the most amazing women I’ve ever known, and my grandmother

Oprah Winfrey – what can I say, I love her!

Ron & Joy Noble – my Uncle and Aunt who took me in and changed my life for the better

Free Hugs

Baz Luhrmann – Wear Sunscreen

Evolution of Dance

We Are The World 25 – For Haiti

Music & Videos

In the past few years I have begun to adopt particular songs for phases of my life, for people I love and the hopes of my heart.  Here’s a sampling, sure to grow in length as I continue to grow in spirit.  I’m into lyrics…these are just some of my favorites.

“Wear Sunscreen” by Baz Lurhmann.  Advice and insight doesn’t get better than this!  Feeling blue, beaten down…just listen to this and life takes on a whole new meaning.  Just search it on YouTube – there’s lots of versions…pick the one you like!

“Better In Time” by Leona Lewis.  Yes, I love everything by her, but this song got me through my separation and divorce.

“Happy” by Adele.  My current theme song.  Listen to the lyrics and it’s me.  It’s this site.  I also think Adele the woman rocks – read any of her interviews and you can’t help but be inspired by her authenticity and frank discussion of life.

“One and Only” and “Make You Feel My Love” by Adele.  Great new love songs!

“Bless The Broken Road” by Rascal Flatts – Soooo true!

“Bridge Over Troubled Water” by Simon & Garfunkel.  I grew up listening to Simon & Garfunkel with my parents, and this is my all time favorite.

Everything by Van Morrison!  Especially, “Crazy Love,” “Into The Mystic” and “Stranded.”

“Daughters” by John Mayer.  I’ve got one.  Enough said.

Rob Thomas – Brilliant!  ”Give Me The Meltdown” plus everything else…

I wish I had more time to read…but, the writer in me always seems to take over!  Here is a short list of books that left a mark.

Single by Judy Ford

The Virtue of Selfishness by Any Rand

Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert

The Shack by William P. Young

The Five People You Meet In Heaven by Mitch Albom

Tuesdays With Morrie by Mitch Albom, again

Personhood by Leo Buscaglia

Gift from the Sea by Anne Morrow Lindbergh, a gift from my Uncle Lanny on my 15th birthday that remains one of my favorite all-time reads

The Art of Non-Conformity by Chris Guillebeau

Vail, Colorado – catch my post on my home-away-from-home here!

Washington, DC – The Mall…how can an American not be moved and inspired there?

Bora Bora, Tahiti – thanks to one sunrise there I found forgiveness, hope, resolve and peace.  Now that’s inspiration.

Maastricht, Holland – I have no idea why this city in southern Holland speaks to me, but it does.  I want to live there, write from there, drink it in and experience it all over again.  Read more about it here

Positano, Italy – Maybe it’s because I have watched “Under The Tuscan Sun” more times than should be legal or maybe it’s because the streets covered in bougainvillea that lead down to the sea bewitched me, I don’t know.  I just know I could get happily lost in Positano…

I’m a quote collector, and have more than I can list here.  So check out my Quote box on the right side of my website for my all-time favorites!
